Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in DOCX (Microsoft Word format), RTF, ODT (Open Office format), or PDF.
  • Where available, URLs for electronic references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions for Preparing the Manuscript for Anonymous Review in the Author Guidelines have been followed.

Author Guidelines

Submitted manuscript should be prepared for anonymous review, have the following form, and comply with the requirements decribed below. Authors interested in submitting a Special Issue proposal are required to used the dedicated Submission Form and to contact the Editor for Special Issues directly.

PREPARATION OF A MANUSCRIPT

These instructions are intended to provide guidance to contributors to The Journal for the History of Analytical Philosophy when preparing an article manuscript for publication. Please read these general instructions carefully before beginning the final preparation of your manuscript. This document presents you with a model for the final layout. It is by no means original and authors may find similarities with sets of instructions given by other publishers. It is nonetheless to be complied with thoroughly.

1. INTRODUCTION

We kindly ask you to submit your document in Word format, RTF, Open Office format, or PDF. (Texts need to be easily accessible by a number of different persons involved in the refereeing and the revision of manuscript. For this reason, only the FINAL VERSION of a manuscript may be submitted in LaTeX format. Authors are required to consult with the editors to confirm at which point of the editorial process they are welcome to do so.)

2. PREPARING THE MANUSCRIPT FOR ANONYMOUS REViEW

To ensure the integrity of the anonymous peer-reviewing process for submissions, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors, and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties:

  • The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text. References to the author's own work should be excluded.
  • With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.
  • With PDFs, the authors' names should also be removed from Document Properties found under File on Adobe Acrobat's main menu.

3. FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS

3.1. Format and Style
The text should be in clear, concise English. Please be consistent in punctuation, abbreviations, spelling (British vs. American), headings, and the style of referencing. Please make sure a fluent speaker of English has proofread the final version of your text.

3.2. Layout of the Opening Chapter Page
The opening page should consist of the title, the subtitle (if used) and an abstract (100-200 words), then the opening text or the first heading.

3.3. Fonts
The font for your manuscript should be a standard serif font such as Times New Roman, in size 12.

4. SUBHEADS
If numbering is used in headings, it should be Arabic, NOT Roman. Please distinguish between the following four levels of headings:

4. SUBHEADS, FIRST ORDER

4.1. Subheads, Second Order
Again, it should be Arabic, not Roman.

4.1.1. Subheads, Third Order

Subheads, Fourth Order. (No numbering is used.)

Where a subhead appears directly after another subhead, leave less space.

5. EQUATIONS
Equations should be centered on the page, with the equation number in parentheses, flush right.
E=mc²    (1)
Wherever possible, try to avoid breaking equations between parentheses, brackets, or braces.

6. SAMPLE SENTENCES
Sample sentence numbers should be indented 0.5 cm. The sentence itself should be indented 2 cm.
(1)    Please put space above and below the sample sentence.

7. QUOTATIONS
Quotations should be indented 1 cm on the left and on the right.
After long quotations, follow indentation or lack of indentation depending on whether a new paragraph is required.

8. TABLES
Please centre tables on the page, unless it is necessary to use the full page width. Font size 9 pts.

9. REFERENCES
Consider References title as a Subhead first order. The font size should be 12 pts. Second and subsequent lines of each reference to be indented slightly (0.5 cm). The examples of bibliographical references below reflect humanities citation style. Thank you for using it.

State authors' names as they are given on the publication itself.  If the full first name is given, it shoud be like this in the list of references too. Only use initials if the original publication only gives initials for the author.

9.3 Electronic articles:

[In-Text: (Marion 2006)]

Where only a reference is provided, do not use a footnote, but give the reference in the main text, in parenthesis. In-text references (main text or footnotes) do not use "p." or "pp.":  (Raven 1998, 36).  Our preference is for exact page-ranges, rather than, e.g., "63ff": (Marion 2006, 63–72).

Articles

Although there is no technical reason to limit the length of articles, we recommend that they stay without reasonable bounds, between 6000 and 12000 words in length. Each submitted article is doubly refereed. The process is fully anonymous. JHAP articles are published under a Creative Commons Licence and authors retain full copyright.
