Nicod and Russell on Wittgenstein’s Picture Theory

During the summer of 1919 at Lulworth, Russell, with Dorothy Wrinch and Jean Nicod, read and discussed the manuscript of the Tractatus Wittgenstein just sent to him. This collective work of deciphering was certainly the main source of the interpretation that Russell set out in his introduction to Wittgenstein’s book. But this episode also had another, less well known, posterity in Nicod, who referred to Wittgenstein in what is the earliest publications in French mentioning the Tractatus. The article aims at explaining Nicod’s view of Wittgenstein, and at comparing it to Russell’s.
